The Hidden Treasure Hunt 2025-26
The Hidden Treasure Hunt encourages primary and secondary schools to become community champions for e-waste recycling. In the UK, we discard 155,000 tonnes of electricals every year, instead of reusing or recycling them - posing a major threat to the environment and to human health.
The Hidden Treasure Hunt helps pupils and families discover the value hidden in unused tech, return unwanted electricals into the circular economy, reduce waste, and develop lasting sustainable behaviours.
Your school can take part in this fun, impactful initiative while giving pupils hands-on experience with sustainability, recycling, and digital responsibility, all while competing for Microsoft tech rewards.
How it works
1. Register your school – Sign up for free to receive your unique Hidden Treasure Hunt code and access your campaign pack, which includes:
- Teacher’s Quick Guide
- Interactive Assemblies
- Curriculum-linked classroom activities, videos and gamified challenges
- Eco-team Challenges
- Posters and promotional materials
- Take-home collection bag/s
2. Collect e-waste – Encourage pupils and families to hunt for old, unused, or broken electricals at home. Items can be taken to:
- Currys stores for recycling, earning a £5 “Cash for Trash” voucher when spending £25+, or higher-value rewards for laptops, tablets, and mobile phones through Currys trade-in promotions.
- School-based collections where available, with safe storage and collection packs provided.
- Other collection points listed via Recycle Your Electricals.
3. Register recycling – Families log their recycling on the campaign platform using your school’s unique code. Each registration counts as a tech point for your school and enters participants into prize draws for tech vouchers and prizes.
4. Climb the leaderboard – School positions are based on the number of participants registering their recycling (not the number of items). The higher your participation, the greater your school’s chances of winning prizes.

Schools register for free to take part in the Hidden Treasure Hunt at www.jointhepod.org/campaigns. How to Register Drop Offs and Earn Planet Care Points
It’s simple! Here’s how to take part:

Take any unwanted electricals or tech (anything with a plug, battery, or cable) to:
- Your nearest Currys store (hand items in at the customer service desk)

If you recycle at Currys, you’ll receive a £5 “Cash for Trash” voucher for use when spending £25 or more at Currys. Some reusable tech items may also qualify for trade-in credit, find out more at Currys - Trade In.
3. Register your recycling online
- Scan the QR code on Hidden Treasure Hunt posters, bags or flyers, or go directly to www.hiddentreasurehunt.org/register.
- Complete the short online form:
- Select the Currys store or other drop of point you used
- Tick the types of items recycled
- Nominate your chosen school from the dropdown list

Myth-Busting
Do old electricals just get dumped abroad?
No — Electricals recycled through Currys and other official collection points aren’t dumped abroad. They’re reuse or recycled in the UK under strict environmental regulations.
Some old electricals that are sent abroad for reuse through unofficial routes can end up being dumped if they don’t actually work. That’s why it’s always best to recycle through trusted services — so everything is checked, handled safely, and recycled the right way.
Isn’t it too complicated to recycle electricals?
No — if it has a plug, battery, or cable, simply drop it at Currys or another official point.
Are small items like cables worth it?
Yes! The unused cables in UK homes could circle the Earth five times, they all contain a little bit of treasure in the form of useful metals like copper and even gold.
Does recycling electricals really help the environment?
Yes — recycling all the UK’s unused electricals would cut CO₂ emissions equivalent to removing approximately 1.3 million cars from the road.
